Japan Airline's bankruptcy filing is one of Japan's largest corporate failures in decades.

Theformer state-owned carrier once symbolized the strength of thecountry's post-war economic boom. But its financial fortunes declinedin the last decade with the fallout from the September 11st attacks, as urge asurge in fuel prices, and the worldwide economic slowdown. The companyracked up more than $20,000,000,000 in debt and its share price hasdropped to a record low of about 3 cents.

The Japanesegovernment bailed out the airline 3 times in the last 10 years but itcould not save the company from bankruptcy this time.

Japan's finance minister, Naoto Kan, vows the government will do all it can to reverse JAL's economic fortunes.

Theairline will continue to operate daily flights but the government isplanning restructuring efforts that will significantly reduce JAL'ssize. About 1/3 of the work force is expected to be cut, along withmore than a score of international and domestic routes.
